FBO Transportation 101: Ground Transport for Private and Corporate Jet Arrivals

The airport experience most ground transportation guides don't cover

Commercial airport pickup instructions don't apply once a flight lands at a private terminal. There's no baggage claim to wait at, no curbside pickup zone, and often no address you can just type into a map app. If you've never coordinated transportation to an FBO before, here's what actually changes.

What an FBO actually is

A Fixed Base Operator is the private terminal on an airport's property that handles general aviation — private jets, corporate aircraft, charter flights — separate from the commercial terminal entirely. Most major airports have two or three competing FBOs, each with its own driveway, its own ramp, and its own gate code for ground transportation drivers. Telling a driver "pick me up at the airport" isn't enough; they need the specific FBO name.

Why timing works differently here

A private jet doesn't wait in a queue for a gate the way a commercial flight does, which means the window between wheels-down and ready-for-pickup is often 10 minutes, not 45. We track tail numbers, not flight numbers, for this reason. A tail number tells us when a specific aircraft actually lands, while a flight number on a private charter can be inconsistent or simply not filed the way commercial flights are.

Ramp access and gate credentials

Getting a vehicle onto the ramp itself, rather than waiting in the FBO's public lot, usually requires the driver to be cleared in advance with the FBO's ground operations desk. This matters most for principals who don't want to walk through a lobby, or for groups moving directly from the aircraft into a vehicle without stopping inside.

What to tell your ground transportation provider ahead of time

The tail number if you have it, which FBO you're using and not just which airport, how many passengers and how much luggage, and whether the vehicle needs ramp clearance or a standard FBO lot pickup. Giving this upfront is the difference between a driver waiting at the right door and a driver calling you from the wrong side of the airport.
